Bluefire Acupuncture – Branding
This freelance project was for a new acupuncture clinic in Mona Vale. The owner of this business was quite restrictive in their brief as it had to follow feng shui, the principals of which I was not familiar. For instance, the colour red was very important to the client as it is activating, stimulating, passionate and powerful. It is also the colour of the fire element, something that would work well with the brand name.
Blue is understood to be the colour of calming, healing, relaxing and soothing as well as feelings of security and trustworthiness. It also represents the water element, which when coupled with the fire element invites yin and yang balance.
Understanding these principals and many many more was imperative to the client but often these rules would go against the rules of design I had learned through college. My challenge was to to find a way to work with both of these teachings in order to provide the best design for my client and their business.
When researching other acupuncture clinic logos I found that most had an oriental feel, making them appear authentic. The owner of Bluefire Acupuncture is as Australian as a lamington so I needed to find a way to attract the attention and trust of consumers in a way that was more contemporary and healing based.
I knew I wanted to create a yin and yang feel, using influences of both fire and water to create a healing harmony which is what most alternative medicine is based upon. The logo I designed combines both of these elements by being in the shape of a flame and containing the soothing feeling of water. The flame shape alludes to the yin and yang symbol as well as being in the shape of a 'b' for bluefire.
The business cards have been shaped irregularly as they are more narrow than the average card. Initially I was hesitant to do this as I know it can be frustrating to have differently shaped cards in your wallet however I came to the conclusion that a business card for an acupuncture clinic is more likely to be kept in a drawer or on the fridge than in your wallet as the number would likely be saved in someones phone.
